Upcoming Multimodal Hub and Bus Terminal Projects in Bangladesh
Last Update: 15 September 2025

The transportation system in Dhaka is going to undergo a transformation unlike anything we have ever seen. Imagine entering a single hub where buses, subways, trains, metro rail, expressways, and even airplanes are all connected, facilitating quicker, easier, and less stressful travel. The future multimodal transport hubs are expected to provide precisely that.
Kamalapur Multimodal Transport Hub: A multimodal transport hub is a large area where many routes of different transportation and communication system meet. Passengers can use it to interchange their preferred mode of transportation to travel to their destinations. It saves time and increases the capacity of the transport sector.
The project will be implemented following public-private partnership (PPP) model under a government-to-government initiative between Bangladesh and Japan.
Kajima Corporation is in the development phase with a Technical Assistance (TA) team conducting detailed feasibility studies now. Kajima Corporation earlier submitted a concept plan and pre-masterplan for the project.
About 120,000 passengers use Dhaka Railway Station (Kamalapur) daily to avail 117 nos trains. MRT 1, 2,4 & 6 will be connected with this multimodal hub . BRT 3 , upcoming subway , elevated express way, upcoming Dhaka –Chittagong High Speed train and inter-district bus terminal facilities will be connected with this multimodal hub .
The targets set in the preliminary proposal are:
1) Relocation of the Kamalapur ICD (probably Gazipur)
2) Demolition and cleaning of all the structures within the depot area.
3) Construction of the 60-storey building.
4) Appropriation of necessary lands for the construction of infrastructure at the Airport Railway Station.
Gabtoli multimodal hub :As of now 2025, the Gabtoli multimodal hub is in the planning stages. Detailed feasibility studies and design plans are underway to ensure optimal integration of the MRT lines with the bus terminal. Construction timelines and completion dates will be established following the approval of these plans.
The development of this hub is part of Dhaka's broader strategy to modernize its transportation infrastructure, aiming to provide residents and visitors with a more efficient and interconnected transit system.
The planned MRT lines intersecting at Gabtoli include:
MRT Line 2: This line will connect Gabtoli to Narayanganj, featuring stations such as Dhaka Uddan, Mohammadpur, Science Laboratory, New Market, Azimpur, and Motijheel.
MRT Line 5 (Northern Route): Spanning from Hemayetpur to Vatara, this route will have a station at Gabtoli, facilitating connections through areas like Mirpur and Gulshan.
MRT Line 5 (Southern Route): Linking Gabtoli to Dasherkandi, this line will traverse key locations including Technical Circle, Kallyanpur, Shyamoli, College Gate, Asad Gate, and Karwan Bazar.
The Gabtoli multimodal hub is envisioned to seamlessly integrate these MRT lines with the existing bus terminal, enhancing connectivity and streamlining transit options for passengers. The project aims to provide efficient transfers between different modes of transportation, reducing travel time and congestion.
Hemayetpur Multi storied Bus Terminal: The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has initiated plans to construct a state-of-the-art, multi-storey bus terminal in Hemayetpur, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and modernize the city's transportation infrastructure.
Project Overview
Location: Hemayetpur, spanning approximately 44 acres.
Structure: Two six-storey terminal buildings.
Capacity: Accommodates between 3,000 to 3,500 buses.
Additional Facilities: Dedicated depot for buses and two floors designated for private car parking, each floor accommodating 46 vehicles.
The existing Gabtoli bus terminal will be relocated to this new facility in Hemayetpur. The estimated project cost is approximately Tk4,510 crore, with construction expected to commence in the upcoming year and a projected completion timeline of four years
Alongside Hemayetpur, three additional intercity bus terminals are planned for the outskirts of Dhaka. This includes relocating the existing terminals at Gabtoli, Sayedabad, and Mohakhali to reduce inner-city congestion.
As of now, the Hemayetpur Bus Terminal project is in the planning and preparatory stages. Detailed designs and feasibility studies are underway to ensure the project's successful execution. The DNCC has submitted a proposal for the terminal to the Planning Commission. Pending approval, the proposal will be forwarded to development agencies through the Economic Relations Department to secure foreign loans.
Kanchpur inter-district bus terminal : Kanchpur Inter-District Bus Terminal is a significant infrastructure project aimed at decongesting Dhaka's urban traffic by relocating inter-district bus operations to the city's outskirts.
Location: Kanchpur, Narayanganj, on a 12.5-acre site allocated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.
Purpose: To serve as the primary terminal for inter-district buses operating to and from 16 districts across the Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
Current Status: As of now ,approximately 40% of the project, including landfilling, has been completed. The remaining construction is on track for completion by mid-2026
Following the operationalization of the Kanchpur terminal, the existing Sayedabad bus terminal will undergo renovation and modernization to function exclusively as an inter-city bus terminal, catering to routes within Dhaka.
Uttara Multipurpose Bus Terminal : The Uttara Multipurpose Bus Terminal is a proposed infrastructure project aimed at enhancing Dhaka's transportation system by relocating the existing Mohakhali inter-district bus terminal to Uttara.
The terminal is planned to be situated approximately 800 meters from the MRT Line-6 depot area at Diabari in Uttara. Designed as a six-story facility, the terminal aims to accommodate thousands of inter-district buses, providing modern amenities and efficient services for passengers.
Investors from South Korea have expressed interest in funding the Uttara Multipurpose Bus Terminal project. This investment is part of a broader initiative that includes the development of a hydro eco-park around the Kallyanpur retention pond in Dhaka, with an estimated investment of around Tk1,000 crore.
As of the latest available information, the project is in the proposal stage, with discussions ongoing between Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) officials and potential South Korean investors.
Multimodal Hub at Dhaka Bimanbandar Railway Station: To develop a state-of-the-art multimodal transport hub at the existing Dhaka Bimanbandar Railway Station, facilitating seamless integration between rail, MRT -1 ,6 , BRT-3, , 2 elevated expressway & air travel services. The project is spearheaded by Bangladesh Railway under the auspices of the Ministry of Railways .Strategically situated opposite Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the station's prime location offers direct access to major transportation networks. the Public Private Partnership Authority issued an international request for expressions of interest for PPP transaction advisory services for the project's development.
Relocation project of Bus Terminals: Five inter district terminal will be built around Dhaka city which is in the planning of city corporation. Feasibility study completed.
1. Hemayetpur
2. Baghair
3. Kanchpur South
4. Bhulta
5. Gram Bhatulia
Also five new bus depot will be built at Atibazar, Kanchpur north ,kanchan, baipal ,gazipur which is still in planning.
